Raven is a “trickster”. Raven appears in a variety of forms making us think they are another type of bird. Their voice can make us think they are human. They often appear to be another color instead of black.  The “trickster” keeps us alert and aware. Honing our skills of observation and broadening our personal perspectives.

If we communicate with Raven it is best to remember that they are true “tricksters”.  Sometimes the answers they give are straightforward and other times the messages are the opposite of what it should be.  The listener must be very in tune with which type of message the Raven is giving.

Raven will show us the brighter side of life with sparkling and shiny objects in its beak or when it dives repeatedly at a shiny object on the ground. When raven does this, it is such an uplifting experience and so necessary for our well being in this illusionary world.

To read more about this aspect of Raven Medicine see my article and personal story of the Raven Heart Woman. NativeTalismanArt.com blog or listing for art print titled Raven Heart Woman.

Animal Medicine Card Native American Art Prints

Lizard Protector is printed on faux parchment paper. Signed on front. This is the first of an animal medicine card series by Paula Bidwell. All of the works were inspired by her dreams, visions or training on the reservation.  Inserted on a separate piece of parchment paper is a copy of the knowledge that inspired the work.

Inspiration: At the beginning of time, lizards were aligned with evil. They destroyed everything in their path. Then in their evolution, they changed and became outstanding protectors of good and powerful fighters of evil. This ability belongs to them because they have complete knowledge of both.

The lizard is also a conveyor of the power to become invisible because of it’s ability to change body color and shape.

The attributes of Lizard are very important to anyone who desires protection from the negative forces in our world.

Vision: A few winters ago, I became very sad. There seemed to be no hope in my life. Then one cold winter night, I dreamed a Raven came to my window and invited me for a ride. I climbed on his back and we took off into the night sky. Flying up and up and up. Then Raven turned his head and with his piercing eyes looked deep into my soul. Our minds and spirits seemed to merge into one. I was no longer a human person. I was as much Raven as Raven himself. I felt a sense of joy and a curiosity. The world was magical. As Raven and I continued to fly, I delighted in all the beauty of our world. When I saw my bedroom window, I knew the journey had ended. Yet, I still felt happiness, curiosity, hope and joy. All the things I had lost through the shadowy depression. To this day I remember vividly how it felt to be Raven.

I hope every time you look at this drawing, you will be inspired to joyfully live another day.

Vision: Mitakuye Oyasin...we are all related... The woman woke from a dream. We are all related, it’s true, the woman thought, as she remembered the dream. An eagle had come in the night and taken her to an ancient time. There she saw how we began as one tribe and then scattered to many distant places. Some places were far across the ocean. As the eagle gently brought her back from the dream, it loosened one of it’s feather to give to her so she would always remember: We are all related.

Vision: We are all related. The woman woke from a dream. We are all related, it's true, the woman thought, my grandmother used to run her fingers down my arm, tracing the blood veins and tell me that I was related to everyone. In the dream many tribes danced together. They danced to the beat of a drum and also to the beat of the women's shells. There were so many tribes, so many men and women. The woman danced with all the people singing with joy in her heart...we are all related.

Vision: By the time I started to dance at Powwows I was already middle aged with creaky knees and not so limber joints. Because of this I entered the Traditional category which a slow rhythmic dance. At this time I had also begun training in traditional medicines and ceremonies and there was little time for the intense training necessary to compete in the category I loved, which is Fancy Shawl. These dancers leap in the air, dance on their toes and spin at warp speed and that is exactly what my spirit wanted to do! But I remained content to watch as the young ladies performed these skills. I have found now in my older years that my spirit still wants to leap, spin and dance, but I find an outlet by drawing and painting the beautiful agile Fancy Shawl Dancers.

Vision:  On a high hill, the woman stood alone with her ceremonial pipe. She lifted her voice in a song calling the one she had awaited many years, the Medicine Bear. The Bear heard her song, felt her heart and approached. The woman and Bear loved each other so much that they merged into one being. Just before they became one, the Bear said: It is the women who know of pain and suffering and it is the women who are the true healers. Many women will dream of me.
